Youth Basketball

Youth Basketball suits a range of ages and skill sets. It enhances physical skills such as agility and coordination, and also helps to develop cognitive abilities including communication, cooperation and concentration.

Participation in youth sports is invaluable to the development of children in Wrangell. Aspects of teamwork, motivation, dedication, discipline, physical fitness, self-esteem, and fair play all contribute to the overall growth and social development of our youth.

Wrangell Parks and Recreation department takes this responsibility seriously and strives to offer quality programming. We are looking forward to another excellent season and we thank you for your participation.

VOLUNTEER!
Volunteering for the Youth Basketball program ensures that Wrangell's youth can experience team sports at a young age, instilling a love for the game. Time on the court introduces youngsters to the concept of team-work while improving physical health and building transferable skills.

Volunteering is a great way to spend time with your child, making memories and encouraging play.

Dear parents & players!
We're heading into the second week of youth basketball practice, with Laura Brenner and George Damian leading the way.
Please note, this age group could really use two to three more parent volunteers to help coach. There are 20 players registered, which is a large number of kiddos for Laura and George to coach. If you can help, please reach out to Lucy by calling 907-874-2444. The lack of volunteers could impact practice times and the amount of court time each player receives. If we have more coaches, the group could be separated into 2-3 teams for scrimmaging and games.
PRACTICE REMINDERS:
Gym shoes only on the basketball court. Players should wear outside shoes to the gym, then change into their gym shoes in the hallway. We're hoping to reduce the amount of Fall/Winter debris & wetness from being tracked onto the gym floor. It's a vintage hardwood floor, so we want to treat it right!
Hang coats, bags & backpacks on the hooks in the hallway. Shoes can be left on the mat located beneath the hooks. This helps to eliminate clutter at the basketball court entrance.
2-3 grade schedule:
Mondays, 5:30pm-6:30pm
Tuesdays, 6:30pm-7:30pm
If you have any questions, call us at 907-874-2444 or shoot an email to recreation@wrangell.com
Happy Monday,
Lucy Robinson

Dear parents & players,
We're blazing through the youth basketball season, with only 4 more practices left. Thanks to the volunteer coaches, the kiddos are learning basic fundamental basketeball skills, getting active and having fun.
Based on feedback from our coaching team, we pushed pause on game play, with referees and score clocks, in order for players to continue to focus on honing the basics.
The last practice for grades 2-3 is on Tuesday, November 1st. We will let families know what to expect. Whether it's a game, officiated by a referee, or a casual 3 on 3 scrimmage, parents and friends will be invited to watch, cheer and enjoy.
Remember, this season would not be possible without our volunteer coaches! Huge THANKS to those that stepped in to coach!!

Dear Parents & Players,
Coach Adrienne and Leroy are hosting a scrimmage tonight, 6:30pm-7:30pm. Jeff Jabusch and Coach Leroy will officiate, while Adrienne coaches the game.
Please feel free to show up, cheer for the players and help out. Parent volunteers are needed to run the score clock and timer. It would be fantastic if parents could also keep kiddos out of the hallway, off the stage and off the court. If you've got children that are not playing, please encourage them to sit in the stands to watch the game and cheer on the players.
Let's do our part to take good care of the gym. There are multiple P&R & WHS activities taking place in this shared space, so it is important that folks help to keep it looking sharp. A few ways you can lend a hand: pick up and toss trash, avoid eating and drinking (anything but water) in the gym, place lost & found items on the stage. We truly appreciate the additional help.
Have fun tonight!
Lucy Robinson

Big thanks to the volunteer coaches! Adrienne, Leroy and Jason, we appreciate your time and effort throughout the season!!
High-Fives to our volunteer refs, Jeff Jabusch and Josh Blatchley, who are always willing to support P&R youth programming.
Parents: please check in with the coaches to see how you can help out at tonight's scrimmage. Tasks could include helping with the clock, keeping score, general gym management: keeping the balls in the cages, kiddos off the stage and out of the hallway.
