The Shoemaker Bay RV Park operates on a first-come, first-served basis and does not accept reservations.

Welcome

Shoemaker Bay Recreation Area is located at Mile 4.5 on Zimovia Highway and offers one of Wrangell's most scenic waterfront settings. Amenities include:

  • RV camping area
  • Tent camping spaces
  • Large harbor for pleasure and commercial vessels
  • Picnic area
  • Public restrooms
  • Beach access and swimming area
  • Panoramic views 

Across the highway is the Rainbow Falls Trailhead - managed by the US Forest Service, which leads to the Shoemaker Bay Observation Site and Shelter.

Camping Regulations

Under Wrangell Municipal Code §13.12.030:

  • RV camping is limited to 10 days
  • Tent camping at Shoemaker Bay tent camp site is limited to 5 days
  • Overnight RV parking is not permitted elsewhere in City parks
  • Tent camping is permitted for up to 48 hours at City Park, located just south of Heritage Harbor
  • Do not camp in park shelters

Extensions beyond the 10-day RV limit may be considered with prior approval. Shoemaker Bay is intended for short-term recreational use and is not designed for long-term parking or residency. Visitors needing extended accommodations should contact one of Wrangell's long-term RV facilities or trailer courts.

Recreation in Wrangell

Wrangell Parks & Recreation manages more than 53 acres of parkland and recreational facilities, including:

  • Indoor swimming pool
  • Weight room and gymnasium
  • Indoor shooting range (winter season only)
  • Outdoor shooting range
  • Ball fields
  • Park shelters and neighborhood parks
  • Community trails
  • Kayak/canoe portage trail

Wrangell also offers excellent hiking, boating, fishing, wildlife viewing, and other outdoor recreation opportunities throughout the community and surrounding Tongass National Forest.

The U.S. Forest Service maintains several campgrounds and trail systems throughout the area that visitors may enjoy during their stay. During the summer months, Forest Service naturalists often travel aboard Alaska Marine Highway ferries, providing information about Southeast Alaska's communities, history, and natural resources.

Welcome to Shoemaker Bay Recreation Area

RV Sites & Rates

Shoemaker Bay offers 25 RV sites and a designated tent camping area.
  • 16 RV sites in the north parking area feature electrical hookups and are available for $30 per day.
  • 9 RV sites located in the Shoemaker Harbor parking area do not include electrical service and are available for $20 per day.
  • A tent camping area with space for up to six tents is located across from the RV sites in the harbor parking area.
RV Site fees are due daily and should be deposited in the payment pipe safe nearest your campsite. Campsites are checked daily, and your payment receipt must be clearly displayed in your vehicle window.

Campground Services

Please note that there is no dump station located within the RV camping area.
  • Potable water is available by request at the Pool Facility, located at 321 Church Street.
  • The RV dump station is located adjacent to the public restroom facilities in the Heritage Harbor parking area at Mile 1.2 Zimovia Highway.
  • Public restrooms are available in the Shoemaker Harbor parking area adjacent to the campground.

Complimentary Pool Facility Access

Registered RV park guests are welcome to use the Pool Facility at no additional charge. Amenities include:
  • Swimming pool
  • Weight room
  • Showers
To access the facility, simply present your RV parking receipt to the staff member on duty.

Pool Facility Closures

The Pool Facility may occasionally close for maintenance or repairs. RV camping rates remain unchanged during temporary facility closures, and discounts or refunds will not be issued when the pool is unavailable.

Shoemaker RV Park Site
The entrance to RV sites 1–16 is located on the water side of Zimovia Highway, just before the Shoemaker Harbor parking lot entrance. This wooded area overlooks the water and includes electrical hookups.

Public restrooms are located in the harbor parking lot, approximately 80 yards from the RV sites. Potable water is available by request at the Pool Facility, and the RV dump station is located in the Heritage Harbor parking lot.

Sites 1–16 are $30 per day. The fee includes complimentary access to the swimming pool, weight room, and showers at the Pool Facility. Please present your paid RV ticket stub for admission.
