Shoemaker Bay Recreation Area is located at Mile 4.5 on Zimovia Highway and offers one of Wrangell's most scenic waterfront settings. Amenities include:
- RV camping area
- Tent camping spaces
- Large harbor for pleasure and commercial vessels
- Picnic area
- Public restrooms
- Beach access and swimming area
- Panoramic views
Across the highway is the Rainbow Falls Trailhead - managed by the US Forest Service, which leads to the Shoemaker Bay Observation Site and Shelter.
Camping Regulations
Under Wrangell Municipal Code §13.12.030:
- RV camping is limited to 10 days
- Tent camping at Shoemaker Bay tent camp site is limited to 5 days
- Overnight RV parking is not permitted elsewhere in City parks
- Tent camping is permitted for up to 48 hours at City Park, located just south of Heritage Harbor
- Do not camp in park shelters
Extensions beyond the 10-day RV limit may be considered with prior approval. Shoemaker Bay is intended for short-term recreational use and is not designed for long-term parking or residency. Visitors needing extended accommodations should contact one of Wrangell's long-term RV facilities or trailer courts.
Recreation in Wrangell
Wrangell Parks & Recreation manages more than 53 acres of parkland and recreational facilities, including:
- Indoor swimming pool
- Weight room and gymnasium
- Indoor shooting range (winter season only)
- Outdoor shooting range
- Ball fields
- Park shelters and neighborhood parks
- Community trails
- Kayak/canoe portage trail
Wrangell also offers excellent hiking, boating, fishing, wildlife viewing, and other outdoor recreation opportunities throughout the community and surrounding Tongass National Forest.
The U.S. Forest Service maintains several campgrounds and trail systems throughout the area that visitors may enjoy during their stay. During the summer months, Forest Service naturalists often travel aboard Alaska Marine Highway ferries, providing information about Southeast Alaska's communities, history, and natural resources.
