Angerman's Playground Update: 10/30/26

Angerman's Playground Revitalization | Project Update: posted & emailed on 10/30/26

There's a lot happening behind the scenes as we work toward revitalizing Kyle Angerman's Memorial Park!
We've received some great feedback and questions following the release of our conceptual renderings, so we wanted to share a more detailed update on what to expect, what's involved, and where we're headed.

OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW!
This project will involve a complete overhaul of the existing playground area, including:
• Removal of the current playground equipment, fencing, and benches.
• Drainage improvements and site preparation.
• Installation of a new playground structure and four-seat swing set.
• New black chain-link fencing around the playground and basketball court, with a separation fence between the two areas.
• Basketball court resurfacing, fresh court lines, updated backboards, new trash bins, and seating.
• New playground safety surfacing and improvements to the surrounding grounds.

What happens to the old equipment?
We're not looking to throw everything away! Our crew will evaluate the existing playground equipment and salvage what we can for potential use in other areas.

The existing benches have good bases, and we'll do our best to reuse them while replacing the worn seating and backs.

If any equipment or materials are designated for surplus, we'll notify the public and list those items through the City and Borough of Wrangell's public surplus process.

LET'S TALK ABOUT THE DESIGN!
First, a quick reminder: The renderings we've shared are AI-generated concepts, not exact construction plans. They look fantastic, and we're certainly going to do our best to bring that vision to life, but the finished playground will not look exactly like the images.

Here's what you can expect:
•Wrangell Wolves Theme: Red, black, and gray playground equipment.
•Swing Set: Two traditional swings, one infant swing, and one ADA-accessible swing, featuring red and gray colors.
•Black Fencing: The entire recreation area will be enclosed, with designated exits leading toward sidewalks rather than directly into the street.
•Separate Play Area: A fence will divide the playground from the basketball court, allowing parents of smaller children to close the gate and provide a little more freedom for independent toddler play.
•Seating: Yes, there will be seating inside the playground area!
•Basketball Court: A refreshed playing surface, new lines, updated backboards, and other amenities.

What about a merry-go-round?

We explored adding one, but unfortunately, there simply isn't enough room.
Playground equipment requires much more space than its actual footprint. Each structure has specific clearance requirements, fall zones, and safety considerations.

We're being intentional about equipment placement to meet applicable accessibility and safety standards. This is particularly important as we look toward future improvements. If the City pursues additional funding to expand or upgrade the playground, we want the equipment we're installing today to be appropriately positioned for tomorrow.

DRAINAGE & SITE PREPARATION
One of the less exciting, but incredibly important, parts of this project is addressing the site's drainage.
Before we can install new equipment and surfacing, we need to make sure the groundwork is done correctly. We'll work closely with the Public Works Department wherever possible and seek additional contractor support if needed.

Playground revitalization involves much more than purchasing equipment. Demolition, drainage, grading, fencing, safety surfacing, installation, and accessibility all contribute to the overall cost and complexity of the project.

We're working through these details carefully to make the most of available funding and resources.

WHAT'S NEXT?
The Borough Assembly has approved the purchase of playground equipment and fencing. We're continuing to coordinate purchasing, shipping, storage, installation logistics, and the remaining project needs.

Our goal remains to begin major improvements in spring 2027, with a target completion date of August 2027.
The Friends of Wrangell Parks & Recreation will also be helping coordinate community and business support. As plans come together, we'll share opportunities to contribute through donations, materials, professional services, and community work events.

STAY INFORMED & GET INVOLVED!
We know playground revitalization is something our community cares deeply about. We care about it, too!
We're doing our best to provide regular, consistent updates about this project and our broader playground revitalization goals. These are significant investments, and we want the community to understand both the exciting improvements and the work required to make them happen.

If you're passionate about our playgrounds, we encourage you to stay engaged!
• Follow P&R updates: We regularly share information through our email communications. Not receiving them? Reach out, and we'll help you get connected through a P&R membership.
• Attend CBW meetings: Work sessions and Borough Assembly meetings are great opportunities to learn about project planning, funding, and decisions.
• Read the Director's Reports: These provide regular updates on projects, operations, and future plans.
• Get involved: Stay tuned for opportunities to donate, volunteer, or support community work events.

And one final reminder: This special space will remain Kyle Angerman's Memorial Park. As we improve the playground, we'll also be looking at ways to refresh Kyle's dedication sign and preserve the meaning behind this cherished community space.

We're excited about what's ahead, and we appreciate everyone's patience, interest, and support as we work through this project.

Great playgrounds don't happen overnight, but with thoughtful planning, community support, and a little Wrangell grit, we're going to make something special happen!
